Azerbaijani tea
In the 1970s and 1980s, tea was grown on 36 hectares and 34 tonnes of tea were produced. During that period, 15 factories were built and put into operation. Domestic tea production in Azerbaijan reached its peak in the mid-1980s. At that time, output stood at 8,600 tonnes, and the area of tea plantations was 13,400 hectares.
Azerbaijani tea met 8–10 percent of the tea demand of the USSR, which had a population of 300 million.
At that time, more than ten tea-processing factories operated in the southern region of Azerbaijan. At the same time, two large tea-packaging plants, employing thousands of hardworking workers, operated in Baku and Lankaran.
